One of the many treatment modalities offered at the Equine Surgical Center is regenerative medicine. Each type of regenerative medicine uses the cells present in the horse’s body to expedite healing and assist in tissue repair. All the options can be completed in a single outpatient appointment. The choice as to which biologic is best for the horse’s individual needs is handled on a case-by-case basis to ensure the fastest return to performance.

Pro-Stride APS concentrates cells, platelets, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory cytokines from the horse’s blood. Pro-Stride is often chosen in cases of osteoarthritis as it is known to relieve pain and assist in balancing cytokines within the joint. The highly concentrated interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein, soluble interleukin-1 receptor, and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors are then injected into the affected joints to bind to the pro-inflammatory proteins called cytokines. Pro-Stride can also be used for synovitis and tendon injuries.

Restigen PRP concentrates the platelet-rich plasma found in the horse’s blood. Restigen is often chosen for soft tissue injuries. The platelets are activated at the injury site, providing growth factors, white blood cells, and anti-inflammatory agents to support healing and repair. With Restigen, over 90% of platelets at a 9-fold concentration are yielded from each process.

CenTrate BMA creates regenerative cells from the horse’s bone marrow found in the sternum. CenTrate is often used in chronic osteoarthritis, bone defects, and tendon injuries. When introduced to the injury site, the bone marrow cells begin to create new blood vessel formations to accelerate repair. The solution takes only 15 minutes to create and hosts mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells, and hematopoietic stem cells suspended in a plasma protein.
